Survey Reveals Employees Using AI Without Official Approval, Posing Risks to Companies

A recent survey on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace has revealed some concerning trends. Despite the potential benefits that AI offers to both employees and employers, the lack of a defined policy around its use may be endangering companies and organizations.

The survey found that more than a quarter (28%) of employees currently use generative artificial intelligence at work, with over half of them using the technology without official approval from their employers. Additionally, 40% of employees use AI tools that are prohibited for use at work, and another 32% expect to use generative artificial intelligence at work soon.

Not only are employees using unapproved AI tools, but they are also engaging in ethically questionable activities when using AI. The report revealed that a significant number of employees are presenting AI work as their own and some are even considering exaggerating their AI skills to secure job opportunities.

Furthermore, the survey highlighted that almost 7 out of 10 workers worldwide have never received training on how to use generative artificial intelligence in a safe and ethical way at work. Employees also indicate that their employers’ AI policies are not clearly defined or non-existent, with some industries lagging behind more than others.

Despite these concerning findings, employees recognize the impact of AI on their careers. Many believe that mastering generative artificial intelligence will make them more in demand in the workplace, lead to increased job satisfaction, and potentially result in higher salaries.

Paula Goldman, VP of Ethics and Human Use at Salesforce, emphasized the importance of investing in employees who use AI. “With clear guidelines, employees will be able to understand and address the risks of artificial intelligence while harnessing its innovations to grow their careers,” Goldman said.

The survey’s findings highlight the urgent need for companies to establish clear policies and provide training on the ethical and safe use of AI in the workplace, in order to fully realize the potential of artificial intelligence without compromising the integrity of the workforce.
