The Association of People Affected by Drugs (ADAF) has filed a fundamental rights claim against the refusal of the Administration (Ministry of Health and Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products, AEMPS) to adequately investigate the numerous reported cases of damage due to Nolotil (metamizol).

This medication can cause a disease known as agranulocitosiswhich reduces white blood cells and increases the risk of infections that can be fatal.

Nolotil is the most consumed drug in Spain, but it is prohibited in about 40 countries. For reasons that are still unknown, the drug harm They are much higher among the British population residing in Spain.

The ADAF lawsuit tries to defend the rights of numerous people who visit Spain or live in our country and who are natives of countries such as the UK, Ireland, the United States, Australia, Japan, Sweden, etc., countries where metamizole is not sold for its high rate of health risk.

According to Cristina García del Campopresident of ADAF,

the medicine is offered to patients without adequate controls. We call for a ban on the administration of the drug to citizens of countries where metamizole has been withdrawn and for the risk factors related to agranulocytosis to be re-examined. Also that the technical data sheet and the treatment leaflet be reviewed.”

Francisco Almodóvarlawyer of Almodóvar & Jara buffetwho is handling the case, states that

las adverse reactions This treatment has caused sepsis, multiple organ failure and amputations. ADAF has identified about 350 suspected cases of agranulocytosis in just a few years. The association is examining more than 40 fatal cases in which it is considered that the medication may have caused or contributed to the death.”

The ADAF has evidence dthe coordinator of the Autonomous Pharmacovigilance Center of the Valencian Community who states that A local study in five health areas in Spain had found “surprisingly” that the British population had a susceptibility to metamizole of the order of “80 to 120 times greater” than the Spanish population. That report was delivered to the Spanish Medicines Agency but has not been published.

For all these reasons, the demand for the protection of fundamental rights has been presented, for the Health inaction when it comes to protecting the population from the risks of Nolotil.
