A new plan to save endangered French biodiversity

DECRYPTION – The government announced 40 measures to “end the collapse of life” and “restore nature” by 2030.

Because it is home to a tenth of the species known in the world and a great diversity of landscapes, France has a « strong responsibility » in the protection of living things, argued Élisabeth Borne on Monday, during the presentation of the new national strategy for biodiversity. The government plan, which is broken down into four axes and 40 measures (read below), aims to « put an end to the collapse of life » and of « restore nature » by 2030.

With a budget of 1 billion euros in 2024, the strategy relies on the mobilization of local authorities, state agents, farmers and businesses to achieve the radical transformation desired by the Prime Minister. Particular attention is paid to overseas territories, which represent only 0.08% of land but concentrate 80% of national biodiversity.
