Brazil’s weather forecast for December is for rainfall close to or below average in large parts of the North and Northeast and above average in part of the South. The information was released by National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) last Friday, 24.

Temperatures are expected to be above average in much of Brazil, especially in the east of the North and much of the Northeast, where average temperatures are expected to exceed 28ºC. Consecutive days with rain over the west of southern Brazil can lower temperatures, which should stay below 24°C.

Areas in the North region, such as the west of Amazonaseastern Pará, Tocantins and much of the Northeast will have rainfall volumes of less than 200 millimeters (mm).

The eastern part of the Northeast will still be in its dry period and it is common for rainfall to not exceed 100 mm. The South Region should have above-average rainfall in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina, which will have volumes above 180 mm.

The center-south of Rio Grande do Sul should have rainfall volumes slightly below average. The areas of Matopiba (agricultural region of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia) will have low volumes of rain, which will keep the water level low in the soil. The exception is areas in the south of Tocantins and the extreme southwest of Bahia, which will see a slight recovery in soil moisture.

“This condition could impact the evolution of planting and initial development of first-crop crops that are already underway,” says Inmet. In central Brazil, the gradual return of soil moisture will be favorable for sowing and the development of first-crop crops.

Except in the north of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, northwest of Mato Grosso do Sul and southwest of Mato Grosso, where Inmet estimates that humidity levels may be low.

“In the South Region, water levels in the soil may remain high and benefit the initial phases of first-crop crops,” says Inmet. “However, in some areas, excess rainfall may result in excess water and waterlogging of the soil, impacting the harvest of winter crops and preventing the sowing of first-crop crops from progressing.”
