South Africa’s HIV Rate Declines According to New Survey

A recent survey conducted by the Human Science Research Council (HSRC) has revealed encouraging results regarding South Africa’s HIV prevalence. According to the 6th South African National HIV Prevalence, Incidence and Behavior Survey, the proportion of the country’s total population living with HIV has decreased from 14 percent in 2017 to 12.7 percent in 2022.

The survey indicates that in 2022, approximately 7.8 million people in South Africa will test positive for HIV, compared to 7.9 million in 2017. The Council’s Executive for Health, Social Affairs and Relations, Khangelani Zuma, cited several reasons for this decrease. Zuma noted that people who test positive for HIV are living longer, and factors such as stabilized spread of COVID-19 have contributed to the decline in HIV prevalence.

The survey also found that 81 percent of South Africans living with HIV aged 15 years and over will have their viral load suppressed in 2022, a significant increase from 62 percent in 2017.

These positive developments indicate progress in the fight against HIV in South Africa. However, continued efforts and resources are necessary to further reduce HIV prevalence and improve the overall health and well-being of the population.
