The unified strike by employees of the São Paulo Metropolitan Company (Metrô), the Companhia Paulista dos Trens Metropolitanos (CPTM) and the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp) is expected to end at midnight this Wednesday (29) , as confirmed by union representatives. The Union of Official Education Teachers of the State of São Paulo (Apeoesp) joined the categories.

According to TV Globo, during a press conference held in the early afternoon, spokespeople for the strikers declared that the strike will last for 24 hours, starting this Tuesday (28). An event in front of the state Legislative Assembly (Alesp) began at 3 pm, the time at which a hearing is scheduled to discuss the Bill that proposes the privatization of Sabesp.

This Wednesday’s strike (28) is the third since October and is yet another attempt by the unions to prevent the plan to outsource services and the privatization of state-owned companies, considered the three largest public companies in São Paulo.

Other categories, such as education professionals from the state network and Fundação Casa employees, also decided to join the movement to demand more investment in education.

Despite the strike, governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) stated that strikes in the transport sector will not stop the privatization plan in the state of São Paulo. “We defend privatizations as a way of bringing investments to the State of São Paulo. This position was successful. We are following the campaign”, he stated in a press conference at Palácio dos Bandeirantes.
