El Salvador, second in CA fencing event held in Nicaragua

The compatriots had a harvest of six golds, four silvers and three bronzes; while Nicaragua, with ten gold medals, eight silver and 19 bronze medals, was crowned champion of the event.

Managua Nicaragua. The Salvadoran fencers finished in second place in the overall medal table of the Central American U-12, U-14 and Senior Fencing Championships, held from November 19 to 26 in Managua, Nicaragua.

The compatriots had a harvest of six golds, four silvers and three bronzes; while Nicaragua, with ten gold medals, eight silver and 19 bronze medals, was crowned champion of the event.

Mihail Salmerón, one of the most outstanding, managed to win three golds. Salmerón’s first gold medal was in the senior men’s foil after beating Derek Quiñones, from Guatemala, 15-6 in the final. The only ones Álex Knoepffler and José Espinoza took the bronzes.

Salmerón’s second gold came in the men’s foil team event, where he competed alongside his teammates Jeremy Deras, Ariel Mejía and Mauricio Reyes. The Cuscatleco team defeated Nicaragua 45-25; Guatemala took third place.

The third gold was due to El Salvador’s victory in the senior team epee final. Salmerón was part of the national team along with Miguel López, Lisandro Quezada and Saúl Villacorta, and they beat the locals 45-27. The Panama team took bronze.

In the U-12 category, El Salvador won two silver medals and one bronze. Schneider Pichinte lost 5-12 in the men’s foil final to Nicaraguan Dixon Duarte, while Kristy Villacorta lost the women’s saber final to local Ashley Delgado 8-12. The bronze was won by Valeria Amaya in the women’s foil category after losing 4-12 in the semifinals against Arleth Estrada, from Guatemala.

Ariana Fuentes, an athlete from the Effort and Glory Program, won two gold medals in the regional event. The first, by beating her compatriot Irene Mena, also an E&G beneficiary, in the final of the senior women’s foil with a score of 15-10. Alisson Vargas (Guatemala) and Hannah Méndez (Costa Rica) took the bronzes.

Fuentes once again climbed to the top of the podium in the senior team foil event, in which he shared credits with Mena, Angela Piche and Alejandra Romero. The Salvadorans defeated the Costa Rican team 45-29; Guatemala was third.

The other gold on El Salvador’s tally came courtesy of the senior women’s saber team made up of Dariana Domínguez, Eva García, Odalis Maldonado and Lesly García. The Cuscatleco team beat Nicaragua 45-36, while Guatemala was third.

Maldonado also added a silver medal to the medal table by losing 11-15 in the senior women’s saber final against Areestel Fraats, from Guatemala. Ana Jaén, from Panama, and Amelia García, from Nicaragua, won the bronzes.

The senior women’s epee team made up of Domínguez, Marcela Portillo, Dayana Ramírez and Patricia, the latter two beneficiaries of the E&G Program, won a bronze medal in the event that left Panama with gold and Costa Rica with silver.
