The investigation follows a particularly dramatic path. The theory of a double homicide committed by a mother on her 6-year-old twin daughters, followed by her suicide, is favored by investigators the day after the discovery of the three lifeless bodies, the public prosecutor of Besançon announced on Tuesday .
Autopsy results and additional examinations are, however, awaited by investigators, while the bodies of the mother, aged 51, and her two children, who would be seven years old, were found Monday at the family home in Grand’Combe-Châteleu, commune adjoining the Swiss border.
The emergency services discovered the body of the mother directly above a beam to which an electric cable had been attached which had broken, which suggests that she attempted suicide by hanging but that this process was failed, prosecutor Étienne Manteaux said during a press conference. Investigators noted that the victim’s airways were blocked by adhesive tape, which led to his slow asphyxiation.
A painful separation
The two children, dressed neatly, were lying in their mother’s bed, under a blanket. Their autopsy reveals deaths by asphyxiation without it being possible to define whether it was inflicted with a pillow or in a bathtub, according to the magistrate.
Analyzes are planned to find out if the children have been previously drugged. No traces of violence were found on the bodies of the victims, nor of the use of weapons. The house in which the events occurred had been acquired by the couple, separated since 2021. A separation experienced painfully by the mother, according to the prosecutor.
The mother had been the subject of a legal reminder following malicious messages sent to the father after their separation. The couple had filed for divorce.
