If we consider all the water on Earth as part of an immense global ocean we will see that, far from being the same everywhere, it forms a vast mosaic of interconnected masses and layers, mixed and divided again by currents, eddies and changes in salinity and temperature, which is what oceanographers use to distinguish them from each other.

Although it may seem otherwise, not all water in the oceans is equal. In fact, each ‘mass of water’ has its own physical properties (such as temperature, salinity, formation history, etc.) and chemical composition. One of the best known is the famous Gulf Stream.
