World AIDS Day Campaign Urges Youth Participation in Prevention Efforts

Dr. Thongchai Keerati Hatthayakorn, the Acting Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, announced today that December 1st marks World AIDS Day, a day designated by the World Health Organization to raise awareness about the importance of AIDS prevention and to rally support for people living with HIV around the world. This year’s theme, “Let Communities Lead,” highlights the crucial role of community participation in driving efforts to end the AIDS epidemic.

Of particular concern is the high number of youth affected by HIV in Thailand. In 2022, it is estimated that 9,230 new HIV infections will occur, with half of those cases (4,379) in the 15-24 age group. Unsafe sexual practices, such as inconsistent condom use, have been identified as the main cause of transmission in this demographic.

Dr. Thongchai emphasized the importance of comprehensive prevention, testing, and care services for all individuals affected by HIV. He called on the youth to actively participate in the campaign to normalize condom use and HIV testing. Free condoms are available at government health services and civil society organizations, and every Thai citizen is entitled to free HIV testing twice a year.

Additionally, the Department of Disease Control has partnered with the Youth Institute of Thailand and the Children and Youth Council of Thailand to spread awareness and messages about the campaign nationwide. Social media will be a key platform for sharing campaign materials, and the public is encouraged to follow the Division of AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases’ Facebook page for updates.

The Department of Disease Control urges everyone to join the movement and support the World AIDS Day campaign. By raising awareness and taking proactive steps, together, we can work towards ending the AIDS crisis. For more information, individuals can call the Department of Disease Control hotline at 1422.
