The expression “regulated like a Swiss clock” does not apply to radars. Swiss police admitted an embarrassing error on Monday, November 27, after four speed cameras unnecessarily flashed nearly 10,000 motorists in just over a month.

The four machines equipped with loop technology installed in mid-September on the roads of the city of Bern were in fact poorly programmed. It was the abnormally high number of offenses recorded in a short period of time that alerted the Bernese cantonal police, reports the local media. RTS.

In addition to this unusual number of offenses noted, many people came forward, police said. “In total, 9,604 erroneous measurements were recorded between September 12, 2023 and October 19, 2023. All those concerned will receive a letter in the coming days and around 6,000 fines already paid will be reimbursed,” indicates the police. in a communiquéwithout giving details of the amounts unduly earned.

To correct this error, the authorities called on the Federal Institute of Metrology (Metas), which had validated the first, however erroneous, configuration of the four faulty radars, to carry out new checks. After extensive checks, the agents found that it was a programming error in the software of the devices. According to them, the speed taken into account by the devices was higher than the actual speed of the vehicles that were flashed.

Temporarily out of service while Metas reviewed them, the radars were put back into service.

To avoid giving false hope to motorists who have recently been flashed on Swiss roads, the local police specify that “these four devices are the only ones used in Switzerland with this configuration and therefore the only ones affected by this error”.
