The Neglect of Children’s Oral Health: Expert Warns of High Prevalence of Tooth Decay

Dr. Sument Mishra, a pediatric dentistry specialist at Al-Amiri and Bneid Al-Qar Specialized Dental Hospital, is sounding the alarm on the neglect of children’s oral and dental health. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 514 million children are suffering from caries in their primary teeth, highlighting a global problem that is not receiving enough attention.

Dr. Mishra revealed that the average prevalence of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) globally is estimated at 23.8%. In Kuwait, a study conducted years ago showed incredibly high rates of caries in early childhood, with up to 79% of children affected. Only about 19% of children were found to be free of caries in the study. These alarming statistics point to the urgent need for action to address the issue of tooth decay in young children.

ECC refers to the development of cavities or tooth decay in children aged 6 years or younger. It primarily affects the milk teeth and can lead to pain, inflammation, difficulty eating, speech problems, and in some cases, affects the child’s overall development. Dr. Mishra highlighted poor oral hygiene as one of the leading causes of tooth decay in early childhood, emphasizing the importance of teaching children appropriate tooth brushing techniques and ensuring they brush their teeth at least twice a day when the first tooth emerges.

In addition to poor oral hygiene, frequent consumption of sugary foods and drinks, as well as the vertical transmission of bacteria from parents or caregivers to children, contribute to the development of childhood caries. Lack of access to dental care and inappropriate visits also lead to repeated visits to the dentist, preventing early detection and intervention, and allowing ECC to progress.

Dr. Mishra called for preventive measures to address the high prevalence of ECC, including promoting good oral hygiene practices, following healthy eating habits, and seeking early dental intervention. It is crucial for parents, caregivers, and healthcare professionals to work together to ensure children’s oral and dental health is given the attention it deserves.

The issue of childhood caries cannot be overlooked any longer, and concerted efforts are needed to prevent and address tooth decay in young children. The future well-being of our children depends on taking proactive steps to prioritize their oral health.]
