Sexually Transmitted Infections on the Rise in Saxony

The number of sexually transmitted infections is on the rise nationwide, including in the German state of Saxony. This concerning trend is highlighted every year on World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1st. The Health Minister of Saxony, Petra Köpping, expressed her concerns about the increase in the number of cases, especially in the context of the estimated total number of new HIV infections in Germany in 2022, which is expected to reach 1,900.

According to the Health Minister, approximately 53% of the new HIV infections in Germany are among men who have sex with men (MSM), while 27% are from heterosexual means, and 19% are from intravenous drug use. The Robert Koch Institute for Saxony is still in the process of finalizing the exact figures for the region.

In Saxony, laboratory tests ordered by doctors have confirmed a slightly increasing number of gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia infections in the first three quarters of 2023 compared to the previous year. This trend is causing concern among health authorities and AIDS organizations.

Petra Köpping emphasized the importance of prevention efforts despite medical advancements in HIV treatment and effective protective measures such as the drug HIV prophylaxis PrEP. She praised the Saxon health authorities and AIDS organizations as reliable partners in the fight against sexually transmitted infections and HIV.

To address the increasing insecurity, a new image campaign for the health authorities has been launched. This campaign aims to provide information about their tasks related to sexual health through explanatory films, city cards, a radio spot, and social media advertising. The campaign also focuses on providing advice and assistance to those seeking help.

The Saxon health authorities offer various services aimed at achieving and maintaining sexual health for citizens, including pregnancy counseling, couple counseling, and advice centers for sexually transmitted infections. The efforts of the health authorities also aim to create an environment free from sexual coercion, abuse, and violence, and to protect against discrimination and stigmatization based on gender, sexual orientation, or sexual identity.

It is important to note that sexual health encompasses more than just sexually transmitted infections. It also includes individual psychological well-being and a positive quality of life with regard to one’s own sexuality. The health authorities are dedicated to ensuring a positive and healthy sexual life for all individuals.
Additionally, Health Minister Petra Köpping honored Dr. Eckehard Hütter with the Saxon AIDS Medal of Honor for his extraordinary commitment to the fight against HIV and AIDS. The recognition was awarded for Dr. Hütter’s influential work with Aids-Hilfe Dresden and his dedication to providing voluntary advice to those in need.
As the count of sexually transmitted infections continues to rise, the focus on prevention and support for those affected becomes ever more important. The health authorities and AIDS organizations in Saxony are determined to address this escalating concern and provide necessary guidance and support for the citizens of Saxony.]
