A double Lifetime Achievement Award for Cinema and Fiction goes to Pupi Avati for the Franco Cuomo International Award held on 4 December in the Sala Zuccari, in Palazzo Giustiniani in Rome: the recognition goes to the great Italian director, author of many masterpieces for the big screen, who have never failed to surprise the public and provide emotions. But also to a master of narrative: his novels are often the other side of the coin of his films, they interpenetrate, sometimes one anticipating the other but also vice versa.

For the theatre, the Franco Cuomo Prize awards go to Paola Gassman, daughter of an artist, who began her career with Luca Ronconi in Orlando furioso and created an artistic and private partnership with another important actor Ugo Pagliai and Massimo De Rossi actor and director, trained at the Scuola del Piccolo in Milan, who has worked with the greats of the theater including Luca Ronconi, Giorgio Strehler, and Franco Cuomo himself in ‘Una notte di Casanova’ and ‘Nero’. The special award for the show goes to Gaia Riposati for her ability to intertwine different artistic languages ​​between theatre, music, art and literature, as well as new technologies. For the Art section, the prizes this year go to the sculptor Paolo Borghi and the painter Marco Rossati.

Awards were also given to other important intellectuals, who represent excellence in the sectors of non-fiction, journalism and good politics: Stefania Palma, Washington correspondent of the Financial Times, Valerio Nicolosi, journalist awarded by the European Center for Peace and Development – University of Peace for his commitment to narrating today’s drama of migration, Antonio Varsori among the major historians of European integration, the rector of the Roma Tre University Massimiliano Fiorucci for his studies on its social and intercultural pedagogy, the mayor of the municipality Belgioioso Fabio Zucca, for good politics and good administration.

The special prizes, selected together with the Association for the Best of Puglia, will go to Giovanni Lo Storto, general director of Luiss Guido Carli in Rome, for his commitment to “connecting” the social capital of the South, and to Luigi Cantamessa, since 2013 general director of the FS Foundation, for having valorised the enormous heritage of the State Railways by transforming it into an extraordinary opportunity, to the Municipality of Deliceto, province of Foggia, for Sustainability, to the Provincial Council for Legality of Foggia, for supporting the initiatives of fight against organized crime, to Luciano Toriello producer and director for the humanitarian issues, linked to social and cultural changes, which he addresses in his documentaries. Finally, this year’s Memory Award goes to Father Arcangelo Maira, for his commitment to refugees and the most vulnerable on the planet from Cologne, Germany, through Africa to the Foggia countryside.

These are all the winners of the IX Edition of the Franco Cuomo International Award, the award named after the writer, journalist and playwright who passed away in 2007, and chaired by Velia Iacovino and Alberto Cuomo. A recognition that aims to enhance new forms of cultural, social and human expression in the name of Cuomo’s work, a sensitive and refined intellectual who knew how to analyze human action and the world from multiple points of view and who narrated his time , through news, history, his novels and his plays.

The award makes use of a prestigious jury of international scope, led by the Hispanist and art critic Otello Lottini, and which includes Grazia Francescato, politician and environmentalist, Emilia Costantini, journalist of the Corriere della Sera, theater critic and writer, Paolo Acanfora, professor of contemporary history at La Sapienza University of Rome, Samir Al Qaryouti, journalist, dean of the foreign press, columnist for France24; Piero Gambale, parliamentary official.

The ceremony will be held on Monday 4 December 2023 at 3.30 pm in the Sala Zuccari of Palazzo Giustiniani in Rome (Via della Dogana Vecchia, 29). Introduced by Professor Fabio Zucca, who will give a talk on the theme ‘United States of Europe. A response to the global crisis?’. The journalist and presenter of Rai Tre Giampiero Marrazzo will present the event. In this edition too, the event obtained the patronage of the Senate, the Ecpd, the University of Peace, the Puglia Region, the Network of Sustainable Municipalities, the Teatro Pubblico Pugliese and the City of San Severo.
