His face had become one of the symbols of the hostages captured on October 7 by Hamas. Filmed receiving treatment on her arm in a video released by the Islamist group on October 16, Mia Shem became one of the first hostages for whom there was a sign of life and a clear situation. The Franco-Israeli woman was released this Thursday, along with another hostage, Amit Soussana, and handed over to the Red Cross.

In the video shot by Hamas, she recited, with a livid face, a few sentences allowing her to be identified. “My name is Mia Shem, I am 21 years old and I come from Shoham. I am currently in Gaza. […] They take care of me, give me medicine, everything is fine. I ask you to bring me home as quickly as possible, to bring me back to my family. Please get us out of here as quickly as possible,” the young woman implored. In the images filmed by onlookers on the way which took her to the white Red Cross ambulance this Thursday, the young woman displayed the same chalky complexion.

Mia Shem was kidnapped from the Tribe of Nova music festival, in the Negev desert bordering the Gaza Strip, where 364 people were killed on October 7. According to the Forum of Families of Hostages or Missing, Mia Shem, who worked in a tattoo parlor, was at the festival in the company of a friend, also Franco-Israeli, Elya Toledano, 27, whose fate is unknown.
