Working four days a week but getting paid for five – this idea sounds tempting. A new project with companies in Germany is now intended to research the effects.

Berlin.

At least 45 companies and organizations in Germany will introduce a four-day week on a project-by-project basis in the coming months. The initiator of the campaign, the management consultancy Intraprenör, told the German Press Agency.

Companies should now try out the four-day week for six months from February – based on the model of 100 percent performance in 80 percent of the time with 100 percent pay. According to Intraprenör, within the project period, companies can rely on experts, learn new methods and exchange ideas with the other participating employers. The participants will be prepared for implementation with workshops until the start in February. The University of Münster is responsible for the scientific evaluation.

The names of the participants were not initially revealed. 30 percent of them are based in North Rhine-Westphalia, 17 percent in Baden-Württemberg and 16 percent in Bavaria. Six percent of the participants are based in the popular start-up location Berlin. Most participating organizations are mostly small companies with 9 to 48 employees (54 percent). 14 percent of participants are large companies with more than 249 employees.

Intraprenör is working on the project with the NGO 4 Day Week Global, which has already brought the project in a similar form to various other countries. In Great Britain, many companies subsequently expressed great interest in introducing the four-day week. Because the companies were able to volunteer for the project, the results from Great Britain and the future ones for Germany are not representative. (dpa)
