The climate summit in Dubai kicked off with a big announcement from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who launched the “Climate club” initiative – an international climate coalition. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of Finland also joined the initiative during the summit, bringing the total number of member countries to 36.

The main goal of the newly formed coalition is to assist developing countries in investing in solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from industries such as steel, cement, and aluminum, which are major contributors to global emissions.

Berndt Nordman, climate officer at WWF Finland, expressed his satisfaction with Finland’s decision to join the Climate Club initiative. However, he emphasized that it is crucial not only to be a member of the coalition but also to take concrete actions and provide funding for climate projects.

The UN climate summit, COP28, is being held in Dubai from November 30 to December 12 and is expected to be the largest to date, with approximately 70,000 participants. The summit aims to address pressing climate issues and create strategies for combatting climate change on a global scale.
