First Sunday of Advent: Vigilance is the Dawn!

Vatican – As Christians, let us act with care and vigilance in our daily lives and do things that make us possess the kingdom of heaven. This was the message shared by Selvaraj Soosaimanikam on the first Sunday of Advent at the Vatican.

During his message Soosaimanikam shared a parable of a man who owned a water shop in a temple inside a forest. The man kept a big stick in his hand to drive away the monkeys as there was a lot of movement in that area. However, the monkeys were relentless and tried to get fresh water whenever the man’s attention was distracted. In one moment of distraction, a monkey ran away carrying a bowl of water. The monkey succeeded because of its vigilance and anticipation of the opportunity.

Soosaimanikam also spoke about the necessity of self-realization in today’s world, where sins are rampant due to human ignorance. He emphasized the importance of being aware of oneself in order to live a sinless life.

In the Gospel message, Jesus advises his disciples to “be alert” and “keep awake,” emphasizing the importance of vigilance. Soosaimanikam reminded the congregation that Jesus’ advice to be vigilant is only found in the Gospel of Matthew, and that it is a recurring theme throughout the Bible.

The message of vigilance and awareness is especially pertinent as the Christian community begins the season of Advent, preparing for the birth of Jesus. Soosaimanikam’s message serves as a reminder for all Christians to stay awake and be vigilant as they await the coming of the Lord.
