“We will have a difficult group but we have the weapons to face it. » This Saturday, a few minutes after the draw for Euro 2024, the president of the French Football Federation, Philippe Diallo, delivered his first impressions and set the objectives of the Blues. And he was clear: he is aiming for the semi-finals.

“For all selections, I always set the same objective: the final four,” he explained. I think we have the players to achieve it. And then when you are in the last four, there may be an additional ambition that is added and obviously, we will not refuse it. »

Before that, the Blues will still have to get through the first round. The Netherlands and Austria will stand in the way of Didier Deschamps’ team, as will the winner of the play-offs between Wales, Finland, Poland and Estonia. A solid but affordable group.

“I think that the Euro is a competition which, in its first rounds, is tougher than the World Cup,” assured Philippe Diallo. The draw is not lacking in this habit. It’s a difficult group, with the Netherlands that we know, which remains the sixth nation in the world, with Austria, which is a solid nation, and with an unknown since at this stage we don’t know still the fourth team. In any case, we will have a difficult group but we have the weapons to face it. »

During the qualifying phase, the Blues had already met the Dutch twice. And the French had rather shone, with two victories (4-0 and 1-2). A good omen before this Euro, during which they will first face Austria (June 17 in Düsseldorf), then the Netherlands (June 21 in Leipzig) and the winner of the play-offs (June 25 in Dortmund).
