Brice de Nice would say that it is “broken” in three. But when you look at it more closely, you just have to assemble its three pieces to reassemble it easily. Invented by two young, trendy boardsports engineers, this new kind of surfboard hopes to appeal to big wave lovers who don't know how to transport their board or simply don't have room at home to store one.

“Like everyone else, I struggled a lot during my surftrips,” says Hadrien Nauroy, 24, co-founder of the Vendée start-up Newave. A board is very bulky in a car, completely forbidden on certain trains, and you have to pay a lot to take it with you on the plane… So we had to find a solution! »

The Vendée start-up Newave has designed a removable board – Newave

After hours of 3D modeling, and at least ten prototypes, here is the solution, pre-orders for which were officially launched online on Friday. An accessory made up of three parts approximately 80 cm long which clip together and lock using an ingenious fixing system (a bar across the width). “The cuts are W-shaped to transmit the constraints as homogeneously as possible,” explains Hadrien Nauroy. We are happy because we managed to obtain good board rigidity. People are often very pleasantly surprised when they try it! »

Practical, but too heavy

Among the other lifts, the original and practical side as well as the shape seem to appeal. But its main problem, and its creators recognize it, is its weight, which still reaches 5 kg despite several improvements. “The concept is super interesting but the board is heavy to surf, it's not very fast, not very responsive. In short, it's a bit clumsy, confirms Johan Cornillon, from the “Allons surfer” club located in La Torche (Finistère), who had the opportunity to test this summer. I think it will remain a fun board, but not necessarily something very technical. »

For the practical side, in any case, everything has been planned since a (large) backpack for storing and transporting your gear has also been developed by Newave. Too bad for the purists for whom the experience begins as soon as they land on the sand, the board under their arm! The start-up, which is in the process of raising funds, is due to open its own production factory in Les Sables-d'Olonne in January 2025. It hopes to produce a few dozen boards to start, and rise to several thousand. here for a few years. The boards, presented as unique on the French and European market, are currently sold for pre-order at 850 euros for the small one and 990 for the large one. “A price equivalent to the start of the high-end”, justifies the brand.
