49ers Dominate Eagles in NFC Showdown
The San Francisco 49ers put on an impressive display in a dominant 42-19 win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, backing up their claims that they would have beaten the Eagles in January with a healthy quarterback.
Brock Purdy made a triumphant return to Philadelphia, throwing four touchdown passes and leading the 49ers to score touchdowns on six straight possessions after falling behind 6-0 in the first quarter at Lincoln Financial Field. The win has made the race for the top seed in the NFC a lot closer than it was at the start of Week 13.
The victory brings the 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys to within a game of the 10-2 Eagles, who will face off against the Cowboys in Week 14, while the 49ers will host the Seahawks in the second game of their season series.
Purdy’s performance was a clear sign that he has fully recovered from his elbow injury last season, as he completed 19-of-27 passes for 317 yards and threw touchdowns to three different players. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel was a standout player, scoring two touchdowns and picking up 138 yards from scrimmage, while running back Christian McCaffrey contributed a touchdown and 133 yards from scrimmage.
The Eagles got into the red zone on both of their first two possessions but were unable to score touchdowns, resulting in a significant deficit. Despite a late effort by quarterback Jalen Hurts, who left for a concussion evaluation but later returned to throw a touchdown to DeVonta Smith, the Eagles were unable to mount a significant comeback.
The game wasn’t without controversy, as 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw was ejected in the third quarter after an incident on the Eagles sideline with security director Dom DiSandro. However, the 49ers continued to dominate, proving to be too much for the Eagles.
This win marks the eighth time this season that the 49ers have scored at least 30 points in a game and solidifies their position as a formidable force in the NFC. The performance will certainly keep opposing defensive coordinators up at night in the coming weeks.
