Braves-Mariers Trade: Kelenic, Gonzales, White, Kowar, and Phillips – Trade Details and Player Analysis

by time news

The Atlanta Braves and Seattle Mariners have made a major trade, with the Braves receiving outfielder Jarred Kelenic, left-handed pitcher Marco Gonzales, first baseman Evan White, and cash considerations, while the Mariners received right-handed pitchers Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips.

Kelenic, a former top prospect, had a strong 2023 season, posting a .253/.327/.419 slash line with 11 home runs and 13 steals in 105 games. Despite a broken foot that derailed the second half of his season, the 24-year-old is seen as a key addition to the Braves’ lineup.

Gonzales, a 31-year-old left-hander, had a rough 2023 season with a 5.22 ERA in 10 starts before undergoing season-ending arm surgery. White, who won a Gold Glove at first base in 2020, has not played in the Majors since 2021.

On the Mariners’ side, Kowar, a first-round Draft pick in 2018, has struggled to find success at the MLB level with a career ERA of 9.12 in 74 innings with the Royals from 2021-23. Phillips also represents a potential addition to the Mariners’ starting rotation.

The trade fills a hole in the Braves’ lineup, with Kelenic expected to play left field for Atlanta. Gonzales, if healthy, can provide much-needed starting pitching depth. Meanwhile, Kowar and Phillips offer potential upside for the Mariners’ rotation.

This trade marks a significant move for both teams as they look to strengthen their rosters ahead of the upcoming season.
