Cyclone Mikjam Chennai Rain Update: Chembarambakkam Lake Water Levels and Resident Alerts

by time news

The city of Chennai and its surrounding areas are facing a severe weather situation as Cyclone Mikjam continues to bring heavy rains and strong gales. As of 5 pm, the water level of Chembarambakkam lake has soared to 8,000 cubic feet per second due to the downpour caused by the cyclone.

The incessant rains have resulted in flooding in many parts of Chennai, with waterlogged roads and seepage into low-lying areas, causing great hardship to the residents. The Meteorological Department has predicted that the rain and wind will persist until tonight.

In response to the severe weather conditions, a red alert has been issued for Thiruvallur district and an orange alert for Chennai, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts. The authorities have warned that the rain is likely to gradually decrease in Chennai from midnight, following the passage of Cyclone Mijm over the Nellore area.

Additionally, the release of water from Chembarambakkam lake is set to be increased from 6,000 cubic feet to 8,000 cubic feet. The current water level of the lake stands at 22.41 feet out of a capacity of 24 feet, prompting the decision to raise the release rate to mitigate the risk of flooding.

The Tamil Nadu government has issued an alert for the coastal residents along the Adyar and Koovam rivers, urging them to take precautionary measures as the rainfall continues. War-time measures have been implemented to evacuate residents to safer areas, and the authorities are taking action to address potential flooding and the risk of fallen trees on roads. The public has been advised to seek shelter in designated areas, where food, medical facilities, and other necessities have been provided.

As the city and its residents grapple with the impact of Cyclone Mikjam, it is crucial for everyone to remain vigilant and follow the guidance of the authorities to ensure their safety and well-being.
