The floor of Braskem’s mine 18, located in the Mutange neighborhood in Maceió, has sunk 1.69 meters since the start of monitoring on November 28 until this Sunday (3), according to the municipality’s Civil Defense.

The region began to be monitored due to new seismic movements this week, which generated an imminent risk of collapse. However, the rate of sinking remains stable.

The index decreased on Saturday (2) from 5 to 0.7 centimeters per hour and remains at the same level until this Sunday morning. The land displacement was 10.8 cm in the last 24 hours. Civil Defense remains on maximum alert and maintains the recommendation that the population avoid traveling in the unoccupied area.

The alarm signal went off last Wednesday (29), when the Civil Defense of Maceió warned that a Braskem mine was at imminent risk of collapse.

The population living near the affected area was ordered to leave the area and seek shelter, and the City Council declared a state of emergency for 180 days.

The first alerts about damage to the ground occurred in the midst of the earth tremors on March 3, 2018. On that occasion, the tremor caused sections of asphalt to give way and opened cracks in the floor and walls of homes, affecting approximately 14 .5 thousand houses, apartments and commercial establishments in the Pinheiro, Mutange, Bebedouro, Bom Parto and Farol neighborhoods.
