The Constitutional Court of Peru issued a decision this Tuesday (5) ordering the immediate release of former president Alberto Fujimori, aged 85.

Fujimori is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses and corruption.

The former president received a presidential pardon in 2017 from then-president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. However, in 2019, the Supreme Court revoked this pardon.

Alberto Fujimori faces serious health problems, including tongue cancer, atrial fibrillation, lung disease and hypertension.

He was convicted of ordering the massacre of 25 people during 1991 and 1992, during his government’s fight against Shining Path guerrillas.

The Constitutional Court’s decision highlights international interference, with the IACHR (Inter-American Court of Human Rights) having previously been involved in Fujimori’s attempts to regain freedom.

Despite having spent a long time in prison, Fujimori has a lot of influence on Peruvian politics.

In 2021, Alberto’s daughter, Keiko Fujimori, ran for President of the country. She was defeated by a small difference of votes.
