Green hydrogen is still far too expensive

Hydrogen is the all-important card that German industry is betting on. Without climate-neutral hydrogen, there will be no green steel, no CO2-free e-fuels, no decarbonization, no energy transition. The question is whether this bet will work, and quickly enough. In order to develop the hydrogen economy, it is important to bring three sides together: without production, there is no consumption. Without consumption there is no production. And without infrastructure, there are neither incentives to produce hydrogen nor to convert industrial production processes to use hydrogen instead of burning coal. There is a lot of uncertainty in the market and potential buyers are delaying the necessary investments.

In order to break this vicious circle, it is essential for Germany as a business location that Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) pushes forward with the planning for the hydrogen core network. 9,700 kilometers of lines are to be built by 2032 and will connect ports, industry, hydrogen-capable gas power plants and storage facilities – only 420 kilometers of which are in operation.
