Before taking office next weekend, Javier Milei is striking a conciliatory tone. The new Argentine president is relying on an alliance with moderate conservatives.

When Javier Milei and Victoria Villarruel were proclaimed president and vice president in Argentina’s parliament last week, they were emphatically inclined and paid attention to every gesture. Rumors of tensions between the two should not be further fueled. However, it has been clear since the weekend at the latest that the mood is likely to be cooler than it appeared in parliament.

In the future, the officer’s daughter will not have the sole say in the country’s security apparatus, contrary to what was promised during the election campaign. Rather, Patricia Bullrich will take over the Security Ministry, who came third in the presidential election as a candidate from the previous conservative opposition alliance. Bullrich was in this post under former President Mauricio Macri between 2015 and 2019. The two took Milei’s side in the first round of voting in October and thus contributed significantly to his victory in the runoff election two weeks ago.
