Stellantis intends to eventually produce one million vehicles per year in its Italian factories, but the Meloni government will have to meet certain conditions, the automobile group warned on Wednesday.

The owner of most major Italian brands such as Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati or Lancia, confirmed this objective of one million vehicles for 2030, as in France, during a round table in Rome with the Italian government, the equipment manufacturers and the unions of its factories.

However, “beyond the level of performance of each factory”, a “series of factors are crucial”, underlined in a press release Davide Mele, vice-president of commercial affairs at Stellantis for Italy. To guarantee its commitments, Stellantis requests in particular “the cancellation of the impact of the Euro 7 standard for entry-level models produced in Italy”.

Stellantis requests subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles

On Monday, the group announced its decision to produce its small electric Fiat Panda in Serbia, sparking strong protests from Italian unions, worried about jobs in factories on the peninsula.

“If regulatory developments and competitive conditions are met at Pomigliano” (the factory that manufactures the Panda near Naples), “Stellantis intends to extend its life cycle and support the factory until arrival of the next range”.

Stellantis is also asking Italy for subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles and the development of the network of charging stations, as well as “improving the industrial competitiveness (of its factories) and its suppliers, including the cost energy”, crucial for the industry.

Negotiations with Stellantis aim to “reverse the decline in production recorded in recent years in Italy in order to reach the threshold of one million vehicles in Italian production sites,” commented Business Minister Adolfo Urso. He added that this objective, which includes utility vehicles, should be able to be achieved “in a few years”.

“We have 6 billion euros in the automotive fund between now and 2030, which we can spend on incentives and supply, to encourage the establishment of other production sites and the conversion to electric,” he assured.

Stellantis successfully produces small Fiat 500s in its Mirafiori factory, near Turin (north) but also numerous utility vehicles in Atessa (south). The group, which also owns Peugeot, Citroën and Chrysler, also plans to build its third European battery factory with TotalEnergies and Mercedes in its Termoli factory (south).

In Melfi (south), production of a large electric DS must be launched in 2024 on the new STLA Medium platform (chassis), before the arrival in 2026 of the Lancia Gamma, also electric, which must participate in the rebirth of this brand. “We must anticipate: the status quo goes against a sustainable business which would benefit employees in the Italian automotive sector,” concluded Stellantis.
