A general assembly brought together around 250 people on Wednesday December 6 at Sciences Po Paris and ended with a show of hands in favor of occupying the historic headquarters of the school to obtain the resignation of Mathias Vicherat, its director, indicates to Monde Inês Fontenelle, spokesperson for the Student Union, student vice-president of the Institute council and elected to the board of directors of the National Political Science Foundation (FNSP). Access to Sciences Po, at 27, rue Saint-Guillaume, in Paris, was blocked by around a hundred students early Wednesday evening.

Mathias Vicherat and his ex-partner, director Anissa Bonnefont, were taken into police custody between Sunday December 3 and Monday December 4 at the end of the day. They accuse each other of domestic violence, without however any complaint having been filed on either side, indicated the Paris prosecutor’s office at the end of the police custody, specifying that the investigation “continues in preliminary”.

For the Sciences Po Paris En Struggle collective, an autonomous group formed during mobilizations, including, recently, that against pension reform, “the trust between the student community and its director is broken”. “We call for the suspension by the administration of Mathias Vicherat from his functions, then a complete resignation to put an end to the structural complacency existing within Sciences Po towards men accused of sexist and sexual violence”writes the collective in a press release.

“He denied everything outright”

Tuesday, December 5, the director wrote a short message to the Sciences Po community, in which he indicated his wish, “above all, that these events do not alter the functioning of [l’]institution ». In a joint statement with Anissa Bonnefont addressed to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Tuesday, both lamented that “elements relating to [leur] private life [aient] been disclosed by the press. Breakups are rarely obvious and should in no way be the subject of communication in the media and social networks.”

This Wednesday, Mathias Vicherat met the student unions, with the exception of the Student Union and Solidaires, who declined the exchange. “He denied everything outright, report on Instagram Stéfania and Sarah – who do not give their names –, representatives of UNEF Sciences Po. He claims to have found himself in police custody because the police felt tensions between him and his ex-partner. He denies everything that came out in the press, any verbal violence. We cannot believe it and ask for his removal, particularly as leader of the unit fighting sexist and sexual violence at Sciences Po.”
