The Irishman won his second European championship title this Thursday in Otopeni (Romania).
Two days after his 400m title, Irishman Daniel Wiffen became European champion in the 1500m freestyle short course on Thursday in Otopeni (Romania). Long on the basis of the world record of the German Floran Wellbrock (14 min 06 sec 88/100), Wiffen won in 14 min 09 sec 11/100. He was well ahead of Frenchman David Aubry (14:21.78) and Ukrainian Mykhailo Romanchuk (14:22.18).
«I’m very happy, it’s a fast time, 5 seconds off my personal best», Reacted Wiffen, fourth in the event at the long course Worlds last summer. “I swam my own race, I didn’t think about the world record, I hoped it would be close at the end. Anyway, I’m happy with the time, the third fastest ever, that’s pretty cool.» Also entered in the final, his twin brother Nathan took eighth and last place (14:38.75).
