MADRID, 7 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

China has presented a conceptual design for what could potentially become the largest nuclear-powered container ship in the world.

The ship, which does not yet have a name, will be powered by molten salt reactors and will have the capacity to transport 24,000 standard containersand has been designed by China State Shipbuilding Corp’s Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai.

According to industry statistics, maritime operations account for around 3 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear propulsion avoids these types of emissions.

According to China Daily, Jiangnan Shipyard said that in addition to the advantages of its nuclear system, the ship will also feature high speed, simple controls and more container space.

According to nuclear technology experts, a molten salt reactor is a type of nuclear fission reactor in which both the primary coolant and the fuel are a critical concentration of fissile material dissolved in molten salts.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said such reactors have been considered a promising advanced solution due to the various benefits associated with them. These reactors can operate at higher temperatures, leading to greater efficiency in power generation, according to the IAEA.

Low operating pressures within a molten salt reactor can reduce the risk of a major rupture and loss of coolant as a result of an accident, thereby improving reactor safety. Besides, They generate less high-level radioactive waste and their design does not require solid fuel, which eliminates backlog and the need for disposal, the agency said.

Currently, the only nuclear-powered cargo ship in active service in the world is the Russian Sevmorput, built in 1988.
