This is a new disillusionment for the family of Marie-Thérèse Bonfanti. She, who has been fighting since 1986 to bring justice to this young mother, who mysteriously disappeared at the age of 25 in the town of Pontcharra (Isère), was shocked to learn of the release of her alleged murderer. Yves Chatain, who was arrested and incarcerated in May 2022, 36 years after the events, was released on Thursday December 7 by the investigating judge in charge of the case.

On November 28, the Court of Cassation considered that the case was time-barred and sent the case back to the Lyon Court of Appeal for a new analysis. Following this decision, Yves Chatain’s defense filed a request for release which was therefore accepted by the Grenoble investigating judge. Yves Chatain, 58, was released from Varces prison yesterday late afternoon. He will be subject to very strict judicial control, with a ban on approaching or coming into contact with those close to Marie-Thérèse Bonfanti.
