Medical expertise seems to confirm the theory of heart failure. On August 11, Stéphane Vitel, principal of a college in Lisieux (Calvados), was found dead in his establishment, after an anti-intrusion alarm was triggered. The prosecution quickly described this death as “suspicious”, the principal’s wife said she was convinced that her husband had “been attacked”. The Caen public prosecutor indicates in West France this Thursday that “the natural cause of death” is favored by doctors.

“There is no evidence of blows,” explains Joël Garrigue. Two boys aged 17 and 19 admitted to having forced a door to the establishment while they were drunk, but they also claimed to have fled before the arrival of Stéphane Vitel. Analysis of the videos from their cell phone confirmed that he was no longer on the site at the time of the principal’s arrival, so they were exonerated of being attacked.

The possibility of a medical problem was then considered by the investigators. The autopsy revealed that the 48-year-old man suffered from a cardiovascular pathology, prompting the investigating judge in charge of the case to request a medical assessment. The results today seem to confirm that the death is “probably linked to this pathology”, explains Joël Garrigue to the local daily, which indicates that the investigating judge met Stéphane Vitel’s wife on Monday to inform her of these conclusions.

Slamming doors

Could the principal have been attacked by other people? “No person entered or remained in the premises between 5:58 a.m. (triggering of the alarm by the two boys, editor’s note.) and 6:34 a.m., the time Mr. Vitel arrived on site,” detailed the prosecutor’s office in a press release.

As for the “footsteps” heard by the two boys, these are the sounds of the sequenced closing of the fire doors, triggered by the breakage of the fire alarm box, investigations carried out by the judicial police revealed. “I noticed it during a test that I attended, we heard clicking noises,” underlined the prosecutor.

Joël Garrigue specifies that there are still some checks to be carried out “to close all the leads”, at the end of which he could make one last point to close this affair which has caused a lot of excitement.
