He still remembers those intense days in which the Container Terminal dock, as well as the bridges and the railway, were being built in the Special Development Zone, and the constant hustle and bustle in the transfer of prefabricated elements did not stop.

These were among the first works in which Yusnay Pino Campos, who currently works as head of the lifting brigade in the industrial yard (also known as the prefabricated yard), of the Mariel Construction and Assembly Company, participated.

When this center was just emerging, he joined its team. “He had no experience in the sector, but he intended to be part of the project; “They trained me and I became a lifting assistant.”

After about nine months in this responsibility, he joined a course to train as a gantry crane operator and, later, became a crew leader, performing both functions in unison.

“I have gradually assumed responsibilities that demand more of me, and I have always stayed in the same place. I am proud to be one of the first to be part of this company and the UEB Industrial Production, as well as the Special Zone.

“It was difficult to venture into something I had never done. I had to start from scratch; He didn’t even have a driving license. To work in lifting, you have to really be interested in this job, otherwise you will never become tough. It is a very responsible job.”

The desire to grow made him overcome and improve himself day by day. Currently, 12 workers make up the brigade that leads, among them, manitou operators, truck cranes, backhoes, multipurpose equipment…, as well as assistants.

When he began preparing the Masters of Construction Detachment – a few years ago – he did not think twice to join the novel idea, after being selected due to his experience and skills. “In four or five months they trained us; We had practice in our favor, but we had to delve into the theoretical and we did not have mastery of pedagogy, so we had to face this challenge.”

Since the detachment was established, it has been the only one dedicated to training lifting equipment operators. “Being a Construction Master entails hard work: it is necessary to put in extra effort because you must also fulfill your tasks.

“A grero, to be trained from scratch, takes years, it is not a two-day mission; You give him the principles and he gains experience, but then a lot depends on his interest and ability.”

Among other works that have marked him the most, he points out the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. “The work of the CIGB was hard, working until late into the night. It was a very big work; of that magnitude, the first I remember. Now there is the Glass Factory that has similar dimensions.”

It has also seen projects such as the Food Processing and Distribution Center (CEDA), the Intermodal Station, the Quiebra Hacha homes, the socio-administrative building of the Container Terminal, the Business Center, the Architecture and Engineering Projects Company germinate. (known by some as Geidos)… Right now, we are working on assembling the TCM perimeter fence, which adjoins our facilities,” he specifies.

Yusnay masters all the equipment in the industrial yard, but the truck crane marks his preference. “It allows you to face new tasks every day, it is not like the portico, which takes on the same task every day. I came to this job by chance of fate and, however, it takes a while! “I don’t know what to do without him.”
