US Veto Prevents UN Security Council Ceasefire Resolution for Gaza

Despite the intense intervention by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the resolution presented to the UN Security Council for a ceasefire in Gaza has failed, as the US vetoed it. The move has drawn criticism from several members of the international community.

The resolution received overwhelming support, with 13 out of the 15-member committee voting in favor. The UK chose to abstain from the vote. The US’s veto of the resolution has raised concerns that it will benefit Hamas and could lead to further attacks in Gaza, similar to the October 7th incident.

The US has defended its decision, arguing that an immediate ceasefire would only lay the groundwork for future conflict, claiming that Hamas does not want a lasting peace or a two-state solution. This comes as UN Secretary General Guterres continues to call for swift action by Security Council members, as the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate.

Following the failed resolution, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) submitted an urgent resolution to the Security Council, with significant pressure being exerted on Israel’s ally, the US, to lend its support. The US’s actions have been met with opposition from the Palestinian Authority and Arab countries.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground in Gaza continues to worsen, with Israel escalating its bombardment across the region. Airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of 11 people in the southern Gaza cities of Khan Younis and Rafah, with more than 20 people losing their lives in Central Gaza. The death toll for civilians in Gaza has now surpassed 17,480.

The rising death toll and the failure to reach a ceasefire have raised questions about the message being sent to the Palestinian people. Mohammad Abushah, the UN Representative from the UAE, has asked, “If we cannot stop the bombing of Gaza, what message are we sending to the Palestinian people?”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs for Iran, Hossein Amir-Abdollahyan, has also warned that the situation in West Asia is heading towards an explosion.

As international pressure mounts for a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts continue, the situation in Gaza remains dire, with no end in sight to the violence and loss of life.
