Duolingo is the world’s most popular free mobile app for learning foreign languages. Duolingo’s annual report is based on data from the app’s millions of users around the world and provides unique insight into which languages are the most popular and how interest in them is changing around the world.

Duolingo Language Report 2023 Based on data from users who learned languages using the Duolingo app between October 1, 2022 and September 30, 2023. It does not include data on students under the age of 13.

English leads the ranking

It’s no surprise that English remains the most popular foreign language in the world. And this year it took first place in 122 countries. The ranking of the most studied languages in the world looks like this: the leader of the ranking – English – is followed by Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Hindi, Chinese and Portuguese.

This year it included Afghanistan, Maldives and Malta for the first time. In many parts of the world, English is important for economic and academic exchange of information. There is especially great interest in English among students in Asia.

Portuguese has supplanted Russian as a leader

Since the launch of the first Russian language course on Duolingo in 2015, Russian language was regularly included in the top 10. However, this year it was supplanted into 11th place by the Portuguese language.

This fact, according to experts, reflects two important cultural changes: a decrease in interest in the Russian language due to the war in Ukraine and an increased interest in Brazil and Portugal, especially among tourists. Portuguese is also popular among Brazil’s neighbors, ranking second among foreign languages in Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. In Paraguay and Uruguay, interest in learning Portuguese is the greatest in the world: about one in five people there study the language.

Interest in learning Ukrainian language

The war in Ukraine is influencing the growth of interest in the Ukrainian language. 37 percent of people worldwide They see learning Ukrainian as an opportunity to show solidarity with Ukrainians and establish communication with them (according to information on the Duolingo blog). In 2023, the countries where the Ukrainian language was studied the most were the USA, Great Britain, Poland, Russia and Ukraine itself. Australians are the most consistent learners of Ukrainian, followed by Canada and Finland.

Germans have overtaken the British in interest in languages

Last year, Finland and the UK were the countries with the highest numbers of users learning 3 or more languages. However, this year the Germans pushed the British from second to third place. The top three countries with the largest number of people studying more than three languages are: Finland, Germany, Great Britain.

Swedish is not the most popular

For the first time since Duolingo began collecting data and publishing annual reports, Swedish was not the most learned language through the Duolingo app in Sweden itself. It lost first place to Spanish. The same thing happened with the Danish language. If in previous years it was in second place in Denmark itself, then in 2023 the most popular languages for learning in this country were Spanish and German.
