The visit of the Minister of Health Michalis Chrysochoidis to the two hospitals of the city of Ioannina coincided with the planned mobilizations of doctors and workers in public hospitals against the bill, which provides for a six-month extension of the contracts of paramedics.
Mr. Chrysochoidis, leaving the PGNI, after the meetings with the management, the managers of the clinics and also the representatives of the workers, passed through the gathered, assuring that the extension, which will be given to the contracts, will be for one year.
However, the request for the permanentization of the contract holders, especially at PGNI, where 517 people, medical, nursing and other staff work with this status, remains, as reported by the president of the Workers’ Association Giorgos Floudas and the member Maria Bouromitrou.
Mr. Floudas referred to the minister’s commitments, adding, however, that this is not the solution and it is considered necessary to convert the contracts into open-ended ones. “The pressure from us will be continuous”, he noted and emphasized that the departures due to retirement, which amount to 80 from the beginning of 2023 until December, should also be covered.
“The minister came like a thief”, noted the general advisor of POEDIN and member of ASY PGNI Giorgos Prentzas, noting that the fund for the stay of the auxiliaries is voted in the 2024 budget, however with the latest bill an extension of six months is given, in order to workers are held hostage in the run-up to the European elections. The secretary of EINI, Babis Pappas, spoke about intentions, noting that the announcements so far provide for minimal positions of doctors in the hospitals of Epirus.
Mr. Chrysochoidis became aware of the demands of the KETHEA Family Association upon his departure from the “Hatzikosta” hospital, while earlier he also had meetings with the Hospital’s Employees’ Association, where salary issues were also raised.

It was enough to hear about the closed operating rooms at the PGNI, about the silent suspension of the Assisted Reproduction Unit, the tragic shortage of public mammographers in the Hospitals of Epirus and about the operation of critical services such as those of the technical services with assignments to contractors,” notes the SYRIZA and concludes: “At the moment when Health workers are mobilizing to defend the public good of Health, the government is selling hope. Health is a serious matter to be treated piecemeal and with promises.”
