The Role of Sports and Martial Arts Training in Indian Schools

There has been an expectation that ‘sports will also create business opportunities’. Countless students studying in government and aided schools and private schools have excelled in sports. Affluent parents hire special coaches, provide training and guide them to participate in district, state and national level competitions.

However, in most government schools, talent in various sports is wasted due to lack of coaches to guide and train them. Recognizing this issue, the Union Ministry of Education and the Tamil Nadu School Education Department are currently encouraging various types of training and competitions in martial arts such as martial arts, judo, boxing, karate, and fencing.

Many trainers who specialize in martial arts are providing training to government school students either on a service basis or for a very small fee. It is the recognition that they get when the students get trained and win in a particular sport, which becomes an address for the coaches. Through it, they popularize their training as a professional method.

Under the Ranilakshmibai Martial Arts Training Scheme, instructed by the Union Ministry of Education, self-defense training has been provided to government school girls since 2015. For the current academic year, 10.41 crores for 6,941 middle schools and 9.4 crores for 6,267 higher secondary schools have been allocated for training.

Different training including karate, judo and chimpanzee should be provided using this fund. The salary of the coaches and the cost of refreshments for the students should be spent from this fund. Martial arts coaches should be selected by school management committees. These training classes should be conducted under the supervision of female teachers. In this training, priority has been given to students studying in hostels.

Therefore, sports and martial arts training is not only about developing skills; The reality is that it is also a lucrative career opportunity for coaches. With the support and initiatives from the government, there is hope for a brighter future for sports and martial arts training in Indian schools.
