Giants with bluish skin playing with tiny humans reduced to the state of pets, a distant planet, populated by a fantastic bestiary and flora all in monstrous exuberance, worthy of a painting by Hieronymus Bosch, the all magnified by Alain Goraguer’s subtly psychedelic score… It’s been fifty years since La Planète sauvage (1973) has been infusing the cinematic memory with its disturbing strangeness. Anniversary worthily celebrated with the publication of a sumptuous box set and a beautiful book, The Odyssey of the Wild Planet, retracing its genesis. Adapted from a science fiction novel (Oms serial by Stefan Wul), this pop masterpiece of arty animated cinema, intended more for adults than for children, owes its incredible beauty, mixed with wit of revolt and melancholy, to the combined talents of René Laloux (director) and Roland Topor, who designed the drawings, and whose little theater of cruelty is well recognized, surreal and nightmarish.

Political and poetic fable on the future of humanity, between determinism and freedom, submission and revolt, intellect and drive, civilization and barbarism (the second being the bastardized product of the first), this new restoration restoring its original pastel colors , gives thanks to the pencil line nourished by multiple influences (Dalí, Magritte, Gustave Doré), where the graphic effervescence combines with the hieratic slowness of the editing. A wonder.

The Wild Planet by René Laloux, anniversary box set (Blu-ray + book + poster), €99.90 (Potemkine). The Odyssey of the Wild Planet by Fabrice Blin and Xavier Kawa-Topor, 232 pp., €45 (Capricci)
