New respiratory disease originating in China prompts alert from Health Minister

Health Minister Amar Ramadhin has issued a warning regarding a new respiratory disease that has originated in the People’s Republic of China. The minister emphasized the need for alertness prior to the Council of Ministers (CoM) meeting.

The Ministry recently released a press statement on global developments related to the new respiratory infectious disease, citing reports from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). A significant increase in the number of people with respiratory complaints, particularly in children, was observed in November, the minister reported.

The WHO, along with China, Europe, and other countries, is currently conducting investigations to address the new respiratory disease. There has also been a notable uptick in respiratory infection reports in Europe. According to Ramadhin, this increase was anticipated due to the winter period, which typically sees a rise in respiratory diseases in November and December.

Ramadhin stressed the challenge of identifying the responsible virus for these respiratory diseases, as various viruses such as Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Adenovirus, Influenza H1 and 2, and the Covid virus are circulating. The Ministry is closely monitoring the developments and conducting specific investigations to determine the causative virus.

With the festive season approaching and the anticipated significant migration, the WHO has advised all countries to remain on high alert due to the easy spread of viruses. The minister emphasized the strict adherence to preventive measures, especially for those who have not been vaccinated.

Individuals who are ill are advised to wear face masks and stay at home, regularly wash their hands, and maintain distance from sick individuals. The minister also stressed the importance of seeking medical attention if feeling unwell. General precautions, including for tourists entering the country, are necessary, and children should be closely monitored by a doctor.

The Ministry of Health is continuing to closely monitor the situation and has urged the public to stay informed and follow the recommended preventive measures.]
