Daniel Wiffen won the 800m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships, breaking the world record for the distance in the process.

Irishman Daniel Wiffen won the 800m freestyle at the European Short Course Championships, breaking the world record for the distance on Sunday in Otopeni (Romania).

Wiffen won in 7 min 20 sec 46 sec, erasing the old record of Australian Grant Hackett which dates back to 2008 (7:23.42).

It was the oldest swimming world record, both small and large pools combined. Wiffen, 22, completed a hat-trick of gold in Romania, following victories in the 400m and 1500m.
