No budget, no growth opportunities law. It is the last week of the Bundestag session this year, and anything that can no longer be discussed will inevitably be postponed until next year. Unless there are special sessions, but those are not planned. On Thursday, what could only have been assumed before became official: the year 2024 starts with a provisional budget. This means that the federal government’s normal operations continue, but the government cannot initiate anything new until further notice.
The next setback for the traffic light came on Friday: the introduction of the investment bonus, the expansion of research funding, the increase in incentives for the construction of rental housing and other tax changes that should encourage companies to invest in the future are blocked. The working group that is allowed to work on the mediation committee did not find a solution. As with the budget, there are deadlines that must be observed. It was clear by the weekend at the latest that it wouldn’t work this year either.
