An indictment against a total of eight people, involved in a case of fraud and money laundering from criminal activity, was filed by the Arta Security Department.

As emerged from the police investigation, a man in Arta contacted last March a person who had posted an ad on a social networking site for the sale of a used vehicle. After agreeing on the purchase of the vehicle, he was persuaded to deposit the sum of 3,000 euros into a bank account indicated to him as a down payment. Subsequently, the alleged seller, claiming that the transaction had not taken place and sending a fictitious refund document, convinced him to make a new deposit.
In the same repeated way, the prospective buyer of the car was misled and made a total of seven money transfers to bank accounts, totaling 21,620 euros.
On the occasion of the above incident, the General Regional Police Directorate of Epirus advises citizens to be especially cautious when they find advertisements for the sale of vehicles at attractive prices as a “buying opportunity” and to avoid paying money in advance to private sellers whom they do not know, even if they disclose their personal information or bank account number. Also, verify the movements in your bank accounts, before any transaction, and state that they are not going to return money, without first cross-checking financial data.

More advice to avoid defrauding citizens can be found on the website of the Hellenic Police (www.astynomia.gr), in the “Citizen’s Guide/Useful advice” section.
