Barbie and Oppenheimer Lead Golden Globe Nominations

The nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards have been announced, with Barbie and Oppenheimer leading the pack with nine and eight nominations respectively. Other contenders include Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things with seven nominations each.

The ceremony, which will take place in Los Angeles on 7 January, will see nominees such as Emma Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio, Cillian Murphy, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph vying for top honors.

Succession leads the TV nominations with nine in total, including best TV drama series. South Korean film Past Lives is the most nominated non-English language film with a total of five nominations.

Barbie’s nine nominations include Margot Robbie as best actress in a musical or comedy, Ryan Gosling for best supporting actor, and Greta Gerwig for best director. Oppenheimer is nominated for cinematic and box office achievement, a new category for the 2024 ceremony, introduced to recognize films popular with the public.

Netflix leads the nominations with 28 in total, while HBO l Max has the most TV nominations with 17. The ceremony will also see the addition of new categories, including best performance in stand-up comedy. As for snubs and surprises, Ridley Scott’s biopic of Napoleon and Ferrari were notably left out of the nominations.

Despite recent controversies, the Golden Globes have secured a broadcast deal with CBS and will also stream on Paramount+. The organization behind the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), has introduced changes, increasing the membership of the voting body from around 90 to 300 and making it significantly more diverse.

The Golden Globes, traditionally a more light-hearted event than many other film awards ceremonies, present a significant opportunity for recipients to add momentum to their awards campaign. With more chances of a Golden Globe nomination than an Oscar nod, stars are gearing up for what is undoubtedly a highly anticipated event.

The hosts for the 2024 Golden Globes have not yet been announced, but previous hosts have included Ricky Gervais, Jerrod Carmichael, Seth Myers, and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Stay tuned for the much-anticipated 81st Golden Globe Awards in January, where the stars will align for an unforgettable evening in Hollywood.
