Help for families at Christmas

All year round, families in an emergency situation have the opportunity to confidently turn to one of the Blue Elephant children’s homes to receive financial support, for example for organizing a birthday, children’s shoes or – as is now the case before Christmas – for food or small gifts for children.

“Especially at the end of the month, many families no longer have enough money for a sensible and healthy diet,” says Oliver Ruddigkeit, chairman of the Stormarn Child Protection Association, “and this year the prices for food have risen sharply again. This overwhelms many families and means that many things are missing at Christmas. We are currently trying to alleviate this shortage by issuing food vouchers or a small amount of money. In order to be able to do this, we rely on the help of the citizens of Stormarn who support us with a donation.”

Private individuals, companies and organizations can donate to the Child Protection Association’s family aid emergency fund; the purpose of the donation is “family aid emergency fund”. The IBAN of the donation account at Sparkasse Holstein is DE50 2135 2240 0130 0083 54. 100% of the donations go to the Stormarn families.

Sophie Weiberg, educational director of the Blauer Elefant children’s home in Bargteheide, says: “We are observing that families still have to make additional payments due to the high energy prices. This puts a lot of strain on the family budget. Energy companies do allow payment in installments, but the rates are actually too high for the low income. If repayment has to be interrupted, there is great fear that electricity or gas will be turned off. Families also often have to save on school supplies because the money from the federal government’s participation package is not enough. At the end of the year there are also clothes purchases that tear a hole in the families’ narrow budget.”

“It is important to us to help without bureaucracy,” says Oliver Ruddigkeit. “Families in need of support can call us and immediately make an appointment at a children’s home in Ahrensburg, Bargteheide or Bad Oldesloe. There they apply for help, which is then given out directly in the form of food vouchers worth 50 euros per child or money. We hope that children and their families can still spend a wonderful Christmas together in these stressful times and get through the winter well.”
