The tourism sector is expected to earn R$155.87 billion during the high season – between November this year and February 2024 – according to research from the National Confederation of Commerce in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC). The entity says that this value represents a real increase of 5.6%, compared to the same period last season, being the largest financial movement in the sector since the beginning of the survey, in 2012.

Tourism was one of the sectors most impacted by the 2020 health crisis – covid-19. After a 36.7% shrinkage that year, the sector has been gradually advancing: 22.2% in 2021 and 39.9% last year. From 2023 to September, the sector’s real revenue increased 7.9%, according to the Tourist Activities Index of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

For the president of the CNC, José Roberto Tadros, the real increase in wages, the reduction in consumer interest rates and the stabilization of prices contribute to this recovery. “The optimism that the survey numbers present indicates not only an economic recovery in tourism, but also renewed consumer confidence, boosting the travel market and contributing to the generation of jobs in several areas related to the sector”, he stated, in a note , Tadros.

According to him, the positive indicators for the high season signal the capacity for innovation and adaptation of the tourism sector, “which is strengthening and preparing for a period of consistent growth”.

Air travel

The number of passengers transported by planes, a key indicator of tourist activity, continues to expand. In the third quarter of 2023, the number of passengers on domestic flights reached 24.25 million, equal to the volume recorded in the same period in 2019.

Regarding international flights, the number is still 8.3% lower than in the same period. During the 2023/2024 high season, tourist spending will focus mainly on bars and restaurants (R$68 billion) and road transport (R$24.34 billion).

Hiring temporary workers

After the elimination of 469,800 formal jobs in the first seven months of 2020 due to the covid-19 pandemic, the tourism job market began a gradual recovery. Since then, 612 thousand new vacancies have been created. Now, for this high season, the CNC estimates the creation of 85,795 jobs, the highest volume since 2014.

“The numbers reflect the solid growth that the sector has been experiencing. The expectation of a real increase demonstrates the resilience of tourism in the face of the challenges faced in recent years”, said the CNC economist responsible for the research, Fabio Bentes.

The food segment should lead hiring, with more than 45 thousand jobs created, followed by transportation in general, with approximately 20 thousand, and accommodation, with nine thousand vacancies. The average admission salary is expected to be R$1,930, a real increase of 1.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.
