After Monday’s rejection of the immigration bill in the National Assembly, all eyes are now on the majority, which has been severely weakened. “It was a majority of refusals that was formed yesterday,” judged the government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, at the end of the Council of Ministers. He confirms that a joint committee (CMP) will be convened, as we revealed a little earlier. The objective? “Debate and seek a compromise between the majority and the oppositions,” explained the minister.

This CMP will have to find this compromise “as quickly as possible”, insisted Olivier Véran. The latter “brings together a panel of deputies and senators proportional to the political weight of the two chambers”. “They are capable of modifying the text and if they agree, we say that the CMP is conclusive,” he detailed, considering that this procedure is “nothing exceptional”.

Despite the slap received in the National Assembly, the executive seems determined to continue the chaotic course of the immigration bill and to at least have its strongest measures adopted, excluding the withdrawal of the text requested by the left. Emmanuel Macron brought together Élisabeth Borne and the main ministers concerned this Tuesday morning to decide on a path forward for a text brutally rejected by the deputies.

According to our information, during his meeting with the Prime Minister and other members of the government, during which Emmanuel Macron requested “the convening of a joint joint commission as quickly as possible”, the head of state shown to be very severe against the PS and LR without naming them, stifling “extreme cynicism and inconsistency, particularly on the part of former government parties”.

The head of state also judged that “yesterday’s vote does not reveal a replacement majority, but only a majority against, a majority to block the country”.
