QUITO | Four children from the same family, including a five-month-old baby, were killed in the night from Monday to Tuesday by armed men in Guayaquil, a major port in Ecuador plagued by crime, we learned from official sources.
The prosecution announced on the X network that it had “opened an investigation into the murder of four children”.
Unidentified armed men entered a house around 9 p.m., apparently with the wrong objective, and opened fire on the family living there, a local police official said during a press conference. General Victor Herrera.
The children were aged five months, three years, five years and seven years. Their parents were injured, the mother being in serious condition “with a guarded prognosis”, announced this official.
The armed men were in fact targeting an “adjacent house”, where explosives “to carry out attacks” were later found by the police, according to General Herrera.
The tragedy took place in the Guasmo sector, a poor neighborhood of Guayaquil where two rival criminal gangs operate, Los Lagartos and Mafia 18.
A large port city of 3.2 million inhabitants, at the mouth of the Guayas River, on the Pacific, Guayaquil is the main exit point for drugs from Peru and Colombia.
It is the epicenter of criminal violence in the country, with executions, assassinations and score-settling almost daily between rival gangs vying for control of the drug trade.
