In the Breton medical deserts, pharmacists take care of everyday “small ailments”

Since 2021, pharmacies have been experimenting with a system that allows them to provide primary care. Cystitis, conjunctivitis, tonsillitis, small wounds, tick bites or superficial burns can be treated without going to the doctor.

These are everyday “little ailments”, benign pathologies, but often painful or uncomfortable, for which it may be necessary to consult a health professional. But in Brittany, in medical deserts or in certain coastal towns that are overcrowded during the summer, it is not always easy to find an appointment with a general practitioner. It is based on this observation that the Pharma Système Qualité association proposed the OSyS system (for “orientation in the healthcare system”) to the regional health agency, as part of a call for projects, in 2019. They can now directly manage six pathologies (cystitis, conjunctivitis, angina, small wounds, tick bites et superficial burns), without medical prescription. This, in addition to the new missions which have been devolved to all pharmacies, for certain vaccinations or screening procedures.
