SMHI Weather Report: Unusual December Temperatures and Road Conditions

by time news

The weather report for December has taken an unexpected turn, as temperatures are set to plummet across Sweden. After a few days of relatively mild weather, the cold air is making a comeback, leading to difficult road conditions in several areas of Götaland.

SMHI’s meteorologist Johan Wiksten commented on the sudden change, stating that the sub-zero temperatures will last until tomorrow, making for a cold Lucia celebration in Sweden. He emphasized that the cold air and high pressure covering the country will result in the Lucia trains singing in sub-zero temperatures in almost the entire country.

However, the weather is set to swing again after Thursday, with unusually mild temperatures expected due to a deep low pressure combined with wind and precipitation. According to Wiksten, the forecast indicates temperatures in the southern half of the country reaching plus degrees, with Götaland potentially experiencing temperatures as high as ten plus degrees at the weekend.

These temperatures are highly unusual for December, with SMHI citing that typical temperatures for the area in question are between zero and a maximum of four degrees. The ten-day forecast also indicates that the unusually warm weather may persist until the following week, making December stand out statistically.

This deviation from the norm comes after a colder than normal November, with SMHI reporting that the lowest temperature in Götaland was measured at -17.2 degrees, and even lower temperatures in Svealand and Lapland. It seems that the winter months are proving to be unexpectedly unpredictable in Sweden this year.
